Summary:Through the Nantou County Government and the Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ "Promotion of Green Energy Roofs Project," NCNU and Xinming Energy Co., Ltd. (新明能源有限公司) signed a lease agreement for solar photovoltaic equipment that will generate 1.5 megawatts of power. This deal makes NCNU the first project site in the government's green energy roof project to challenge the 1-megawatt benchmark, and cements NCNU as a green university and a development center for sustainable energy.

Summary:A series of forums and proposals aimed at brainstorming for more localized and creative ideas on regional empowerment took place at National Chi Nan University on May 13. Organized by LESSON+ (Learning and Enhancement Center for Small-business Startup of NCNU) and CTCA Taiwan (Creative Tourism and Community Design Association in Taiwan), the program was attended by delegates representing the tourism, grassroots revitalization, and agricultural cooperative interests of the central Taiwanese regions of Nantou, Taichung, Changhua, and Yunlin.

Summary:To help disadvantaged students join the public education system, 11 Taiwanese universities including National Chi Nan University have signed up for the Ministry of Education's (MOE) newly launched "Visionary (願景計畫)" recruitment program, which encompasses 410 slots in 97 departments and research fields. NCNU's nationwide participation rate of 94% translates into an additional 75 students from disadvantaged backgrounds joining the public educational system.

Ceramic Arts Association of Nantou (南投縣陶藝學會) Chair Wuu Chia-zhi (巫嘉智) is celebrating his 40th year as an artist by showcasing 40 of his large-scale, hand-sculpted art pieces on campus through June 6. President Dr. Dong-Sing Wuu (武東星) says that the artist's embracement of sustainability in both his art and on the environmental front stands testament to his creative drive and love for Taiwan.

Title:NCNU greets NIAG torch procession with Gamelan-inspired anthem

Summary:The torch of the 2021 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games (NIAG) arrived at National Chi Nan University (NCNU) on May 5 as part of a 1,168-kilometer marathon around the island to bring the NIAG flame and spirit to all 30 participating universities. The lively torch-bearing ceremony reflected both NCNU's athletic ambitions and the NIAG motto of "bravery, motivation, passion." After making a ceremonial lap around the spacious campus, the delegation was greeted by a beautiful remix of traditional Indonesian music in a live rendition of "KUFFY~Gamelan!" —  a brand-new anthem composed by NCNU's Gamelan ensemble and dedicated to the intercollegiate games.

Summary:Heeding the Executive Yuan's call for community empowerment and regional revitalization, National Chi Nan University (NCNU) is working with local alliances and grassroots groups in Nantou County's Ren'ai Township to transform the mountainous heart of Taiwan into a world-class stargazing destination. Taiwan is uniquely positioned on Earth, with latitudinal and longitudinal advantages that allow stargazers here to behold 82 out of the 88 constellations officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). As such conditions are rarely met elsewhere, star-chasers from neighboring Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong all fly to Taiwan.

Summary:Based in Ren'ai Township of Nantou County, the team behind the coffee start-up Lai Bai (來唄工作室) comprises Sunay Mayaw (高國郡) of the Amis tribe, Tiang Tamalasan (黃紹剛) of the Thao tribe, and Lawa Tesing (石翔碩) of the Bunun tribe. Utilizing their different backgrounds and experiences, these entrepreneurial students successfully applied for the MOE's "U-start Plan for Innovation and Entrepreneurship," receiving NT$1.1 million seed fund in two parts: NT$500,000 in 2020, and NT$600,000 in 2021.

Title:NCNU's women softball team wins Taiwan university league

Summary:National Chi Nan University captured the 2021 university softball championship title on March 28, winning 7:0 against National Taiwan University of Sport at the Taichung King Long Baseball Stadium. NCNU President Dr. Dong-Sing Wuu (武東星) pointed out that, at six students, the university's female softball players make up nearly one-third of Taiwan's national softball team training for the 2022 Asian Games. With generous support from the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education, NCNU is also constructing the country's only sports field tailored for women's softball to train more world-class players and coaches.

Title:From fruit peels to fragrant beverage: NCNU uncovers the secrets of coffee cherry tea

Summary:National Chi Nan University's USR Hub has developed a tidy new caffeinated drink by upcycling the flesh of the coffee fruit, which was previously discarded as industrial waste. This byproduct of the coffee sector's bean-focused manufacturing can, in fact, be used to make a fragrant and stimulating beverage. Known in Spanish as Cascara, meaning "skin" or "membrane," coffee cherry tea is made by brewing sun-dried coffee peels — whole berry husks that puff up like little cherries upon re-encountering water.
